Baseball Manitoba is introducing updates to its 9U division to better support player development and create a more consistent experience for families across the province.
Beginning this season, the former Grand Slam program will officially be renamed the 9U Division, providing a clearer progression for players moving from 7U Rally Cap into structured baseball.
In addition to the name change, updates include adjustments to the game format and a new pitching development opportunity.
Name Change: Grand Slam to 9U
The Grand Slam program is no longer a nationally recognized model. Players advancing from 7U Rally Cap will enter the 9U division - a modified version of traditional baseball.
Game Format: 9 vs. 9
9U games will now be played 9 vs. 9, including outfielders, replacing the previous 6 vs. 6 format.
This structure:
Scores will not be kept at the 9U level. The focus remains on skill development, confidence, teamwork, and learning the game - not on competition or standings.
Pitching machines will continue to be used to promote confidence at the plate, consistent game flow, and continued development of fielding, throwing, and base running skills.
New Pitching Development Clinics
Baseball Manitoba will offer pitching clinics for 9-year-old players to introduce pitching in a safe and controlled environment. Since player pitching begins at 11U, these clinics - delivered locally toward the end of the season - will help players and coaches prepare for the transition.
Local Flexibility
These updates serve as recommended guidelines. Local associations will continue to have flexibility to adapt programming to best serve their communities.
Baseball Manitoba remains committed to providing safe, fun, and inclusive development opportunities for young athletes across the province.
