2022 Scholarship Winners Presented at Shaw Park

Every year all of us at Baseball Manitoba look forward to presenting our 2022 scholarships at Shaw Park. Last night, three Field of Dreams Scholarships, four Baseball Manitoba Scholarships, and the Andrew Budge Memorial Scholarship were presented to all recipients before the Goldeyes faced off against Kansas City.

Winnipeg Goldeyes - Baseball Manitoba "Field of Dreams" Scholarships:

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Brady Papineau - Field of Dreams

From Great Falls, MB, and a member of the Carillon Sultans, Brady is a Certified Level 1 Umpire who has played on the 15U Baseball Manitoba Provincial Team, and competed at the 2018 Western Canadian Championships and the 2019 Ray Carter Cup. He coaches youth basketball, soccer, and volleyball, and volunteers many hours of his time to various programs within his community. This fall, he plans to start his two-year diploma at Dakota College in Bottineau, North Dakota with a goal to finish with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries and return home to apply his training to the province of Manitoba’s wildlife.

Jonah Norman is from Winnipeg, MB, and is a member of the Bonivital Black Sox. In his final season in 18U AAA (2022) he has been named Captain and currently leads his team in hitting (with a .452 batting average), RBI’s, stolen bases, and hits. He enjoys umpiring 11U and 13U within his association, and is excited for this fall when he will not only be competing for a varsity position on the baseball team, but he will begin his studies of Sport Management and Finance at the University of Minnesota Crookston, with the hopes of attending Law School after graduation.

From Winnipeg, MB, Riley Craw is a member of the 22U AAA Elmwood Giants and currently attends Lake Region State College, Devils Lake ND. During his first year at college, he lead by example and never missed a practice or workout. He played with the Elmwood Giants in the 2022 season and secured the provincial title for the fifth year in a row as well as secured a spot at the 22U Men's Canada National Championship which happened in Halifax this month. He plans to graduate from Lake Region State College in May of 2023 with an Associate Arts Degree, Majoring in Accounting and is considering further education at a four-year school with the hopes of playing more baseball in the U.S. He is returning to Manitoba in May 2023 to play another season of baseball with the Elmwood Giants 22U AAA team.

Baseball Manitoba 50th Anniversary Scholarships:

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Darbi Poole - Female Provincial Team Player

From McAuley, MB, Darbi Poole is a member of the U18 Miniota Royals, U18 AAA Midwest, and the 21U/Senior Women’s Provincial Team for Baseball Manitoba. She has coached for the Girls Baseball Program in Brandon, MB, and has played many high school sports including Cross County, Badminton, and Track and Field. Her current plan is to attend Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the fall of 2022 to play hockey on the Women's Team and study kinesiology with the goal of becoming an athletic therapist.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Evan Hildebrand - Umpire

Evan Hildebrand is from Brandon, MB, and is currently attending the University of Saskatchewan. He is affiliated with Brandon Minor Ball, Brandon Senior ball, and the Southwest Baseball League. He has umpired for six years, and this year was his first year as a Level 3 Umpire. He enjoys giving back to his community by mentoring younger umpires and continuing to learn and grow as an umpire himself. His plan is to continue his academic career at the University of Saskatchewan with the goal of becoming a physiotherapist.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Ryan Powers - Player

From Beausejour, MB, Ryan Powers is a multi-sport athlete, having played baseball for the Carillon Sultans as well as high school volleyball and basketball. He has competed in the Western National Championships three times and previously umpired in his local community and Winnipeg for two years. He has also assisted Beausejour Brokenhead Minor Baseball Association in building a pitching mound, volunteered with a local mosquito tournament, and helped with diamond maintenance. This fall he will be pursuing his dream of playing college baseball at Okanagan College in Kelowna B.C. while working toward a business degree in hopes of eventually becoming a financial advisor.

Cody Gunderson is from St Malo, MB, and is a member of the Carillon Sultans U18 AAA team as well as a Baseball Manitoba Provincial Team player. Cody has umpired, played baseball at a community level, and also competed at the 2018 Western National Championship. He will be attending Hutchinson Community College in the fall of 2022 with the goal of becoming a Physical Education teacher or Personal Trainer. He also has a goal of completing a University Degree after he graduates from Hutchinson, with the hopes of being drafted to the MLB.

Andrew Budge Memorial Scholarship - Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Ryan Powers

The Andrew Budge Memorial Scholarship is open to students entering the first year of a full-time post-secondary program at an accredited university or college. Andrew Budge was a talented Manitoba athlete from Winnipeg South who passed away suddenly in 2010 at the age of 24. Hockey, curling, golf, and of course, baseball were among his interests, and it was his passion and love for sport that inspired the creation of this scholarship. All of us at Baseball Manitoba want to thank Andrew’s family for coming to the event, and to thank his mother Wendy for presenting this scholarship to Ryan Powers.
